‘Cold Operator’ by Carson Mell
Just put up the second installment in the Community Shorts summer series — Carson Mell’s awesome ‘Cold Operator‘! Enjoy…
Saturday Morning: A One-Act.
INT. KITCHEN OF NEW YORK APARTMENT - DAY
JOSH has just finished brewing a fresh pot of cheap coffee, pours himself a cup. PHIL enters. He has clearly just woken up; he has blue Grandma slippers on.
JOSH: ‘Moring.. er.. Good Afternoon.
PHIL: Hey man… Yeah… Wow… Hey…
JOSH pours a cup and hands it to PHIL. No sugar. No cream.
PHIL: Ughh… I can’t find my hat… You know that beanie I always wear?
I shouldn’t really worry about it though, I look too much like an extra from a Coolio video with it on.
JOSH: Yeah, you kind of do.
There is a pause as they respectively take a sip of their coffee and savor it.
All of a sudden an alarmed look washes over JOSH’s face. PHIL looks at him confused.
JOSH bolts out of the kitchen and comes running back in within seconds with a laptop in one hand, his coffee cup in the other. He sets both down on the kitchen table and opens the laptop.
JOSH types vigorously as PHIL looks on, still befuddled by what exactly is happening.
JOSH turns the laptop toward PHIL.
PHIL’s jaw drops.
PHIL (mouths the words, silently): NO WAY!
CUT TO:
R. Kelly is Acquitted on all charges.
That’s right. On all fourteen child pornography charges.. Not Guilty. (?!?!) New York Magazine has kept a pretty amazing record of the utter insanity around this trial that’s worth a look if you’ve got time to kill. My favorite is the Waynes Brothers defense. Wow. That’s Real Talk.
I Think I’m in Love
Today I stumbled upon a video from a band I had never heard of before in my life. In fact its a band I will probably never listen to either, but dear god the instruments they play!
The thing she is playing with is called a Tenori-on. This little piece of machinery allows one to make loops by touching a series of LED buttons on a small screen. You can even upload your own samples and connect with other Tenori-on users. This shit is serious. Check out the designers website for the Tenori-on below

Mario’s Pullin’ Some Shit in San Diego Tomorrow
Our old friend Mario is always keepin’ busy in San Diego and tomorrow night he’s presenting the new Vice documentary Heavy Metal in Baghdad at The Whistle Stop (2236 Fern St). The screening starts at 9pm and then Mario and his cronies will be playing records afterwards. Not to be missed.
New York vs. LA (Tacos)
My long lost brother and eternal partner in crime Josh Malmuth just launched what’s probably the best blog on the internet: LostTaco.com
I won’t try to explain it, I’ll just quote the ‘about’ box:
I recently moved from Los Angeles to New York, so this is a fairly emotional issue for me. I can’t believe that there aren’t any good tacos in this city. It just doesn’t seem possible. Somewhere in New York there’s a delicious stranded taco, waiting to be found. If you can help, let me know.
Community Shorts (.com!)
We finally launched our new video magazine at communityshorts.com. One new excellent featured video a week and constant updates from the best people around (including everyone from here!). Website coded by the one-and-only Malmuth (epic hypertext for his name coming later this week!) and flash player by Nic Couillard (’da man!).
And embeddable videos! (but you should check out the website anyway…). Week 1: The Man in the Moon by Waverly Films –
Baby!
Hotchacha
I just got back to New York and we’re in the middle of an insane heat wave.
I wonder what it’s like in Haiti right now…
Summer Jams ‘08
I know things have been quiet around here for a little bit, but we’ve been busy in the real world! Both of our events were great successes (proper reports coming soon) and CommunityShorts.com is on track for a Monday launch, but what I’ve got to direct your attention to immediately is the long-awaited release of Planet People’s Summer Mix ‘08. Boo-ya!
